The Wife and I are soon moving from Austin, Texas to Columbus, Ohio. We visited the past couple of days to find a place to live. We found a townhouse that has more room than our current a-part for much less than our current rent. It's a bit out of the way, but we are both excited. There are stairs so the cat is going to have a blast. He likes being above people.
There's been a couple of big differences so far. Here are a few:
1: No access roads. That doesn't sound like a big deal but it does make navigating a bit difficult. And by a bit I mean, "You missed your exit? Well, that's too bad for you. Looks like your taking another lap around the city!" At least there is more than one highway here. It will be nice not having to go to 35 or Mopac to go anywhere. It will be a while before I am able to get anywhere without the maps app. Maybe I'll steal The Wife's magellan. Don't tell her.
2: Less big chains. I'm not talking about literal chains. (There aren't many of those either.) But there aren't many big chain stores. We haven't seen a Wal*Mart the whole time we have been here and have only seen a couple of Targets. There's only one mall that could really be called a mall, and it's on the other side of the city. There aren't as many big chain restaurants either. They're mostly around the mall. The restaurant thing is a bit exciting, though. Lots of mom and pop shops to check out. (Lack of whataburger makes me a bit sad.)
3. The third one kind of goes with the first. I know what you're thinking: "Why didn't you put it with the first one?" Well...I like three. It's a good number. Also, pappa don't backspace. Backspace is for losers. Boom. Well, the difference is that the street signs aren't always right by the traffic lights at intersections. Actually, usually it isn't. Usually the street sign is on the corner. Like an intersection without traffic lights. This makes looking for streets difficult. That's it. I'm taking The Wife's GPS. I don't care that sometimes it gets confused and thinks that it's in San Antonio.
Next time I post will probably be after we move in. Until then I leave you with this:
We just moved to Columbus a little while ago. We love it so far! Unfortunately, you are wrong about Wal-Mart. There are PLENTY of Wal-Marts. There are also quite a few malls, just not in the downtown area. They are very mall-ish. Restaurants are great - especially in Short North. We loved eating at Betty's! Good luck with your move. Following you on Twitter now!
